A Plumm Summer was funded by HomeTeam Productions, owned by executive producers Scott Erickson and Lisa Guerrero. The film is based on an event that occurred in Billings, Montana during 1968, the hometown of screenwriter T. J. Lynch. At the time, there was a very popular locally produced children's TV show on the air called Happy Herb & Froggy Doo. Happy Herb was a magician and Froggy Doo was his wisecracking string marionette sidekick. Froggy Doo was stolen and held for ransom, and the FBI was called in to investigate. The incident received national attention when it was reported on the Huntley-Brinkley Report.
The film is a story of family dynamics and brotherly love as two young boys go toe to toe with two comical FBI agents to solve the mystery of the missing frog.
