The bank is a product of a long history of mergers and acquisitions that date back to 1765. In 1991 Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN) and Amsterdam and Rotterdam Bank (AMRO, which was in itself the result of a merger, see main article on AMRO Bank) agreed to merge to create the original ABN AMRO.
