The airline was established in 1980 as Airline of the Marshall Islands and adopted its current title in 1989. It is wholly owned by the Government of the Marshall Islands and has 90 employees (at March 2007).
In January 2009, all Air Marshall flights were suspended while their only plane, a 34 seat Dash-8, suffered damage to its wing after a collision with a FAA tower while it was under tow. Replacement parts were ordered, but flights were further delayed in February when the replacement part that was shipped in was for the wrong wing.
