The airline was originally formed as New Hebrides Airways and changed its name in 1981 to Air Vanuatu, after independence from the UK and France in 1980. It has been fully owned by the Government of Vanuatu since December 1987. In September, 2004, Air Vanuatu merged with Vanuatu's government-owned domestic carrier, Vanair.
Air Vanuatu operates 28 domestic routes throughout the country.
