At the age of 22 in 1997, Khanna made his debut in his father's production Himalaya Putra. His next release was J. P. Dutta's Border (1997) for which he received a Filmfare Best Debut Award. His next release was the film Mohabbat with Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Kapoor in the same year. This movie did not do well in the box office.
