Davis was born in Brockton, Massachusetts. However, he grew up in Brooklyn as part of a wealthy family, and to this day speaks with a marked Brooklyn accent. He spent most of his youth in the Flatbush neighborhood and attended Erasmus Hall High School. He attended Wittenberg University and Syracuse University, where he earned a degree in English. Upon graduation, he began his coaching career as the line coach at Adelphi College from 1950 to 1951. From there Davis served as the head coach of the U.S. Army team at Ft.
