Alan John Carpenter (born 4 January 1957) is a former Australian politician. He was the 28th Premier of Western Australia, serving from from 2006 to 2008. He took office following the resignation of Dr Geoff Gallop. His government was defeated at the 2008 election.

Carpenter was a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 2009, representing the district of Willagee. Prior to becoming Premier he was Minister for Education and Indigenous Affairs (2001–2003), Minister for Education and Training (2003–2005), and Minister for State Development and Minister for Energy (2005–2006).
Carpenter was born in Albany, Western Australia,was educated at Lockyer Primary School then Albany Senior High School. After graduating in 1974, he travelled Australia, working a variety of different jobs before returning in 1977 to study political science at the University of Western Australia and graduated in 1979.
