Almost the entire span of the highway is divided with a minimum of two lanes in each direction.
Highway numbering on the Trans-Canada highway began in 2004. As of 2009, however, only the stretch of highway between Canmore and Calgary have numbered exits. It is unlikely that exit numbering will be employed throughout the entire highway, owing to the fact that the highway passes through Calgary as a major urban arterial road.
As per Alberta convention, highway exit numbers are numbered from west to east.
