Valli was born in Pola, Istria, Italy (now Pula in Croatia), to parents who both had mixed ancestry. Her paternal grandfather was Luigi Altenburger, an Austrian-Italian from Trento and her paternal grandmother was Elisa Tomasi from Trento, a cousin of Ettore Tolomei.
