AUT was founded by Habib Nafisi in 1958 and began activities with 5 engineering departments. It was renamed in 1979 after the former Iranian prime minister Amir Kabir (1807–1852). With the expansion of the university, now it has fifteen science and engineering departments, and two other affiliated centers, located in Bandar Abbas and Mahshahr.
