Anastasiya Vertinskaya was born in Moscow in the family of famous artist Alexander Vertinsky. Anastasiya made her film debut as a schoolgirl of 15 portraying Assol in Scarlet Sails, a film version of beloved Alexander Grin book. She was personally invited to audition by the film director Aleksandr Ptushko. The film came out in 1961 and was an instant success, immediately making Anastasiya a celebrity. Alongside Vertinskaya, the film employed many of the present and future stars of Soviet cinema, including Vasily Lanovoy, Ivan Pereverzev, Sergey Martinson, and Oleg Anofriev.
