She is a Democratic member of the United States House of Representatives representing the state of Maryland, and former wife of White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler Wyatt was already divorced from Toby Ziegler by the first episode of The West Wing. Some of the events surrounding this were shown in flashbacks in the fourth-season episode Debate Camp. The reasons for the divorce are unclear, but the flashbacks indicate that the couple's desire to have children was impeded by their busy schedules. It appears she has been in office for a while, as in a third season episode she stated that she was the third ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
