As Executive Managing Director of Globespan, Andy sources new
investment opportunities, evaluates and negotiates investments, and
serves on the boards of portfolio companies. A Globespan Co-Founder,
Andy brings thoughtful creativity, a global perspective, and a wealth
of deal experience to help the firm's entrepreneurs build successful
companies. Most recently, Andy
was named on the Forbes Midas List of Top 100 Technology Deal Makers in
2006 and 2007 (with a ranking of 60 in 2007) and Boston Business
Journal's 40 under 40 List in 2007.
Andy serves on the boards of
Akorri,
Covergence,
Hatteras Networks,
Idiom Technologies,
Incipient, and
Vericept Corporation.
Andy previously led or served on the board for the team's
investments in Aptis Communications (acquired by Nortel Networks),
Argon (acquired by Siemens), Cerulean Technology (acquired by
Aether), eDocs (acquired by Siebel), m-Qube (acquired by VeriSign), Net
Perceptions (NASDAQ:NETP), Ocular Networks (acquired by Tellabs), Pirus
Networks (acquired by Sun Microsystems), Silknet (NASDAQ:SILK),
ShoreTel (NASDAQ:SHOR) and Virtusa (NASDAQ:VRTU).
Andy was the Senior Managing Director of JAFCO Ventures, where he
opened the Boston office in 1997. He built JAFCO's presence on the east
coast and, along with Barry Schiffman, led the seamless transition and
spinout of Globespan Capital from JAFCO Ventures in 2003.
Prior to JAFCO, Andy founded and directed Trans National Group's
venture investing, TN Ventures, where he negotiated TN's investment in
Infoseek (NASDAQ:SEEK), Interzine (acquired by TimesMirror), Tickle
(acquired by Monster; NADAQ:MNST) and International Data Response
Corporation (acquired by Telespectrum, NASDAQ:TLSP). Andy was also
integral in the sale, to MBNA, of TNFS, one of the largest credit card
origination companies in the U.S.
Earlier in his career, Andy worked in corporate development at Kikkoman
Corporation's headquarters in Japan. He was responsible for identifying
new business opportunities in the Japanese market and ultimately
founded and expanded Kikkoman's health club business. He also worked at
Booz-Allen & Hamilton in the Marketing Intensive Group and at OPTA
Food Ingredients.
Andy got his first taste of entrepreneurship and venture capital while
at Phillips Exeter Academy. He started a Cookie of the Week business
and baked over 1,000 cookies weekly. Today at Globespan, he enjoys
"helping to make the imagined, possible." He does so by building
productive relationships with the firm's entrepreneurs, "by being a
good listener, providing space and not interfering." Andy also knows
that working as a team, going slower to go faster, is critical to reach
the important, value-building milestones for a company.
Andy earned an AB degree in East Asian Studies and Economics, magna cum
laude, from Harvard College and an MBA, with distinction, from Harvard
Business School. He lives in Boston with his wife and two children, who
voted him "Best Dad" in 2005. Andy serves on the Board of Trustees of
Harvard Business School's Arthur Rock Center for Entrepreneurship and
is a National Commissioner for the Anti-Defamation league. He has
also served on the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Contemporary
Art in Boston. He enjoys playing squash, tennis and golf.
