During her childhood, Anko was a former student of Orochimaru, and came to admire her powerful teacher. One day, apparently after Orochimaru was discovered conducting inhumane experiments, Orochimaru took Anko along with 9 other children to one of his lairs in the Land of the Sea, an island nation east of Konohagakure. During the trip, Orochimaru branded all ten of these children with the Cursed Seal of Heaven to see if there were any chances of surviving it. Anko was the only student who survived, and the seal was determined to have only a 10% chance of survival. Because she lacked the lust for power and vengeance needed to fuel the seal, the seal would never work for her. Orochimaru then gave Anko the choice of following him forever,...
