All in The Family series creator Norman Lear was initially against the spin-off. Carroll O'Connor, however, rebuffed Lear, saying that the character of a middle-aged bigot from Queens was his creation and Lear had worked the series around that theme. The spin-off was given a green light and bought by CBS.
