Steve Armstrong originally came to the station to fight in the games, but when he arrived he learned there was no place for an honest human among the cutthroat and dirty alien games. He now works as a short order cook on a space station which is the center of Arena fighting. After a violent encounter with an alien named Fang Steve and his alien friend Shorty are fired. They are pursued by the manager of the Fang, who Steve knocked out, since Fang was an Arena fighter. Fang's manager Quinn is amazed that Steve could best Fang and offers Steve a short contract as a fighter. Steve initially refuses.
