Ariel Durant, born Chaya Kaufman, (10 May 1898 – 25 October 1981) was the co-author of The Story of Civilization. Durant was born in Proskurov, (now Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine) to Ethel Appel Kaufman and Joseph Kaufman. The family emigrated to the United States in 1901.
