In the film, Toht is tasked with acquiring the headpiece to the Staff of Ra from Marion Ravenwood in Nepal for Colonel Dietrich, but he fails. However, he does supply Dietrich with half of the medallion's inscriptions when they become burned into his hand as a result of Toht trying to pull the headpiece from the fire in Marion's Nepalese tavern, The Raven. Marion also appears to develop a fear of the man after their encounter. Toht accompanies Belloq and Dietrich to a small island where Belloq plans to open the ark, whilst a Nazi camera crew film what happens. At first the contents of the ark enrage Dietrich, whilst Belloq is simply horrified and disapointed.
