Born in Windber, PA, Miller's family relocated and he grew to adulthood in Gainesville, VA. His first job out of college was as a middle school English teacher. He then went on to work for the US Navy as an independent defense contractor. Miller eventually moved to California, starting his career as a writer on the television show Andromeda after meeting one of the shows producers.
