During production, co-star Robert Shaw was driving with his wife when he started having chest pains and died of a heart attack. Most of his lines were dubbed as his voice was ailing and declining rapidly during the production. Director Mark Robson also died suddenly of a heart attack several months earlier. It is thought that Monte Hellman took over the directorial reins after Robson's death; Hellman, however, is not credited in the film.
