The "Barjansky" Stradivarius cello (c.1690) is named after the Russian virtuoso cellist Alexandre Barjansky, who played the instrument during the first half of the twentieth century. Barjansky was the dedicatee of Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo which he premiered on the Stradivarius. He also premiered the cello concerto by Frederick Delius.

Since 1983 the Barjansky Stradivarius has been played by Julian Lloyd Webber who has made more than thirty award-winning recordings—including a renowned version of Elgar’s cello concerto, conducted by Yehudi Menuhin—with the instrument.
