Lopez was born in Port Chester, New York and raised in Southern California and New York City. He attended the University of Notre Dame, earning undergraduate and graduate degrees there in 1966 and 1968. He also attended New York University and the University of Oregon. His first stories appeared in 1966, and, until 1981, he was also a landscape photographer. He regularly collaborates with other artists and writers and is active in national and international efforts toward reconciliation. He has traveled to nearly 70 countries and in 2003 was elected a Fellow of the Explorers Club.
