All horse coat colors are either variants of the dominant Black (EE, Ee) or the recessive Chestnut (ee) base color.  The dominant Black pigment is caused by production of the protein Eumelanin (yoo-MEL-a-nin).  The recessive Chestnut color is caused by the pigment called Pheomelanin (fee-oh-MEL-a-nin). more
