It was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, with two Marine battalions facing a large PAVN force intent on destroying the USMC Khe Sanh Combat Base in Quảng Trị Province. The Marines stormed the hills, and took them, with losses of 155 KIA and 455 WIA. The PAVN were well dug in, but lost over 900 troops and withdrew.
