In this version, the least faithful to the novel, there are two brothers instead of three, and Beau joins the Foreign Legion after taking the blame for a crime committed by his business partner. There are no sequences shown of his life before enlisting in the Legion. The film starts with a Legion relief column approaching an apparently deserted fort, when they take a closer look they find dead legionnaires manning the ramparts. Then suddenly a shot rings out followed by two more, when the legionnaires enter the fort they find only Beau Geste alive but seriously wounded. The commanding officer questions Geste about what has happened as he lies recovering and the story is then told from Geste's point of view. A line of French Foreign Legion recruits are paraded before the tough veteran Sergeant Dagineau (Telly Savalas), Dagineau then proceeds to put the recruits through torturous training.
