Bimal Roy was born on July 12, 1909, to a Bengali family in Dhaka, then part of the Bengal province of British India and now the capital of Bangladesh. Following the independence and partition of India in 1947, he moved to the Republic of India.
Bimal Roy entered the field of cinema as a camera assistant with New Theatres Pvt. Ltd. During this time, he assisted director P.C. Barua on the hit 1935 movie Devdas, starring K.L. Saigal.
