Black Hawk County is one of the three counties that make up the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 572 square miles (1,481 km²), of which 567 square miles (1,469 km²) is land and 5 square miles (12 km²) (0.84%) is water.
The Cedar River roughly divides the county in half from the northwest to the southeast corner. The land is mostly level since much of it is on the river's flood plain.
