The film is noteworthy for using many distinctive pieces of St. Louis architecture as locations in the story. The St. Louis planetarium stands in as the headquarters for the research project, and the Gateway Arch is destroyed in one scene as is Busch Stadium and the city hall.
The film stars Judd Nelson as the main character, Eric Bryce, a nuclear physicist essential in solving this problem, with Kristy Swanson playing Dr. Shannon Mueller as the secondary leading character.
