After his arrival in the town of Godolphin, sports coach Steve Walker mistakenly conjures up the ghost of Blackbeard (Ustinov), who appears as a socially-inappropriate drunkard whose contempt for humanity has damned him to an existence in limbo unless he can perform a good deed.
