The plot is based on an actual homicide case from Victorian England. Blanch Fury (Valerie Hobson) is a beautiful, but evil woman. She is aware of the legal problems of a large estate that she has a claim to, and the father and son (the latter played by Michael Gough) who currently run it. However she is also aware of a poor worker on the estate with his own farm (Stewart Granger) who is an illegitimate heir as well. Using her guile, she manipulates Granger into murdering the father and son. He is tried and executed for the double murder. She would seem to be victorious, but the conclusion of the story shows she does not win either.
