A post office was established in Boaz in 1887. The first postmaster, G.M.E. Mann, named the town after the biblical character Boaz. The name was suggested by his father-in-law Henry McCord of Albertville. Boaz was incorporated in 1897. In October 2007, a referendum that proposed the annexation of the Mountainboro by the city of Boaz passed by a one-vote margin. The result of the referendum was challenged, and legal activities delayed further action until 2009.
