Bob Costas was born in Queens, New York. He is the son of Jayne (née Quinlan) of Irish American descent and John George Costas of Greek American descent, who was an electrical engineer. He grew up in Commack, New York, graduating from Commack High School South. Following high school, he attended the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, though he left school before graduating to begin his professional career as a commentator.
His sportscasting career started while attending Syracuse University, as an announcer for the Syracuse Blazers minor-league hockey team playing in the Eastern Hockey League and North American Hockey League.
