Thompson was born in Ellensburg, Washington to teacher parents. His first role was playing one of the punks who are killed by Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in The Terminator at the beginning of the film. His most prominent role was as the Night Slasher, the enigmatic leader of a cult of serial killers in Cobra alongside action star Sylvester Stallone. The same year, Thompson played a nasty German in John Landis' comedy Three Amigos. Thompson also appeared as Russel in the 1990 action film Lionheart, and as Buffalo Bob in the 2001 comedy film Joe Dirt, starring David Spade. In the 1990 film, Hired To Kill, he got to kiss Oliver Reed.
