The alternative rank of "Brigade general" was first used in the French revolutionary armies, and was used in British and Commonwealth armies in the first quarter of the 20th century.
In the Commonwealth of Nations the equivalent rank for most of the last century has normally been Brigadier, while many other countries use the rank of brigade general.
