According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 498 square miles (1,289 km²), of which, 494 square miles (1,278 km²) of it is land and 4 square miles (11 km²) of it (0.83%) is water. The eastern boundary of the county is the Withlacoochee river which meanders along an estimated distance of 100 miles (160 km).
