Greenberg was born in Omaha, Nebraska to psychologists Denny and Carl Greenberg. He has a younger sister, Becca. Greenberg was raised in Conservative Judaism. He moved with his family to St. Louis, Missouri when he was twelve years old. He graduated from Parkway Central High School in Chesterfield, Missouri. Greenberg became interested in acting at an early age, and moved to New York City after high school. He attended a Jewish summer camp located in Webster, Wisconsin, called Herzl Camp. He starred as Joseph in a camp-wide production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in 1992.
