Bug-Jargal is a novel by the French writer Victor Hugo first published in 1826. It is a reworked version of an earlier (1818) short story of the same name written by Hugo in two weeks as a result of a bet, at the age of sixteen. The short story was published in the literary magazine le Conservateur littéraire in 1819.
