It is considered a follow-up film to the 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and 1961's Mysterious Island. From the plot however, this is not clear. Whilst in Verne's book the events of '20,000 Leagues' are stated as taking place in or around 1866, and the events on the 'Mysterious Island' as later still, characters in the 'Underwater City' refer to the War between the States as currently ongoing, which places it before '20,000 Leagues' by as much as five years. In this story, Nemo rescues a group of survivors from a sinking ship and takes them to his underwater city, Templemir, a self-sustaining utopian colony with communitarian inhabitants.
