Struycken was born in The Hague, Netherlands. When he was only 4 years old his family moved to Curaçao, an island in the Caribbean. At age 15, when he was living on the island of Curaçao, he composed several Caribbean waltzes. At 16 he returned to his home country, where he finished secondary school.
