A research department headquartered at Rice University, Houston, Texas, The Center for Research on Parallel Computation, or CRPC, was one of the National Science Foundation's 25 Science and Technology Centers from 1989 to 2000. It was formed to make massively parallel computing systems as usable as conventional supercomputing systems of the 1990's. This research focused on algorithms and software needed to make parallel computing truly usable for science and engineering applications at that time. It's successor was The Center for High Performance Software Research (HiPerSoft) established in October 1998 and which itself has since ceased operations as a separate entity within the Rice University system.
