Brady was born in Pinehurst, North Carolina, but considered Robbins, North Carolina, to be his hometown. He lived, during the last years of his life, between homes located on the islands of the Puget Sound and Bethesda, Maryland. He enjoyed canoeing, kayaking, tennis, biking and amateur radio operating. His father is deceased, his mother resides in Robbins, North Carolina.
While many official news reports state that Brady died after a lengthy illness, after NASA released emails related to Brady under the Freedom of Information Act, other sources indicated his death was the result of suicide.
