CHEK-TV (channel 6) is a television station based in Victoria, British Columbia and broadcasting to all of southwestern BC (including Vancouver). CHEK-TV (channel 6) is a television station based in Victoria, British Columbia and broadcasting to all of southwestern BC (including Vancouver). The station has been operating since December 1956 and is the first and oldest privately-owned station in British Columbia (only CBC-owned CBUT in Vancouver is older).
CHEK is currently owned by Canwest, though a sale to CHEK Media Group, owned by station employees and local investors, was agreed to on September 4, 2009 (with approval from the CRTC still needed). This occurred after Canwest planned to permanently shut down CHEK on August 31, 2009 due to the closure of its E! television system (of which CHEK was an owned-and-operated station) and the absence of a buyer for the station on terms deemed acceptable by Canwest. CHEK is currently operating as an independent station.
