Plummer was born Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the son of Isabella Mary (née Abbott, granddaughter of Prime Minister John Abbott) and John Plummer, who was secretary to the Dean of Sciences at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
