As an unincorporated area, Clarksburg's boundaries are not officially defined. Clarksburg is, however, recognized by the United States Census Bureau as a Census-designated Place, and by the United States Geological Survey as a populated place located at 39°13′10″N 77°17′17″W / 39.21944°N 77.28806°W / 39.21944; -77.28806 (39.219488, -77.288001). According to the United States Census Bureau, the place has a total area of 14.1 square miles (36.5 km²), of which, 13.8 square miles (35.8 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it (1.85%) is water.
