The school was known as the College of St. Catherine until June 2009. The school's patron saint is St. Catherine of Alexandria. The Saint Paul campus of St. Catherine was founded in 1905 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. It was named for Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The Minneapolis campus was founded in 1887 by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet as St. Mary's School of Nursing.
