Congregation Beth Israel-Judea is an egalitarian synagogue located at 625 Brotherhood Way in San Francisco, California. It is affiliated with both the Conservative and Reform movements.
Congregation Beth Israel was founded in 1860, and was "the first conservative congregation west of Chicago." After worshiping for many years in leased spaces, the congregation built its first synagogue on Turk Street between Jones and Taylor Streets. Construction began in 1874 and the building was dedicated in 1879.
The congregation outgrew this building and built a new synagogue on Geary Street near Octavia. Known as the Geary Street Temple, it was dedicated in 1891. In 1905 the congregation began building again, an even larger building on Geary between Fillmore and Steiner Streets. The building was nearing completion when it was destroyed by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The congregation rebuilt on Geary Street.
