One of four children, like her, her mother was an actress and her father was a teacher/acting coach in Boston. When Connie was just a little girl, she appeared in many of her father's stock-company plays. Her father died, when she was 15. At 17, she was married and resided in Jacksonville, Florida with her then insurance husband. She worked in both radio and stage, where she joined a stock company in Miami, Florida. By the time she was divorced, Hines traveled to New York City to study with the Helen Hayes Equity Group.
When she came to Hollywood, California, she lived in an apartment, rented a car and by age 22, she got her start in acting on an episode of Whirlybirds.
