What sort of topic can be a famous first?
Firsts are meant to be historically significant topics that can be linked together and grouped meaningful ways. These usually take the form of proper nouns like people, places and companies but other things may also apply.
What sort of topic should not be a famous first?
Famous firsts are not suppose to be an exhaustive list of world records so things like "first man to run 100m in 9.69 seconds" is technically a first but is too specialized to be part of this base. Other examples of improper famous firsts would be "First Lady of the United States", "first letter in the alphabet", "first thing you should know about traveling to China", etc.
What sort of topic can be an achievement?
An achievement is a Freebase topic that represents the feat that was accomplished as part of the famous first. For example, Louis Washkansky was the first person to recieve a heart transplant. To show this we set his achievement as "heart transplantation". Even though it might sound odd to say "Louis Washkansky was the first heart transplantation", its important to re-use existing Freebase topics as much as possible rather than creating a new one specifically for "heart transplant recipient". By re-using achievement topics, we are able to group related firsts together by achievement so that if we go to the President of the United States topic we can see that George Washington was the first, JFK was the first Catholic, Barack Obama was the first African American etc.
What are achievement categories?
Achievement categories are used for several purposes. First of all, they can be used to show a famous first that is a specializations of another first. For example George Washington is the first President of the United states but Barack Obama is the first African American President of the United States. To show this we set both George Washington and Barack Obama as Firsts with the Achievement of President of the United States but we differentiate them by putting George Washington in the more general Person category while Barack Obama is in the more specific African American category.
Another benefit of using categories is that it provides an easy grouping of related firsts. This means that you can go to the African American topic and see a list of all the historically significant firsts that apply to African Americans.
