The head of CONTROL was called the Chief (during Maxwell Smart's time, the Chief's real first name was Thaddeus, whose original CONTROL identity was Agent Q). "CONTROL" is not an acronym. Letters stands for nothing else than "Control". "CONTROL" should not be spelled with dots ("C.O.N.T.R.O.L.") or it would confuse agent 86.
