Brown is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he played defensive back. He was a two year starter, co-captain of the 1992 team, and All-Big 10 in 1992.
Brown had an eight year career in the NFL (1993-1996 with New England, 1997-1998 with the New York Jets, 1999-2000 with Detroit).
Brown has previously worked as a special teams coach under Al Groh at the University of Virginia and as a defensive backs coach for the New York Jets from 2004-2007. On January 19, 2007, he was named the Defensive Coordinator for the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish, replacing Rick Minter. During the Irish's 2007 spring practices, it became clear that Brown and his defensive staff are implementing the 3-4 defense at Notre Dame.
